From waking up in the morning to going to sleep at night, science plays an extraordinary role in every aspect of our lives. Yet, even in this dot-com age, a section of people has begun to follow the path of superstition, ignoring the contributions of science. To develop a scientific temperament among such people, a science-based organization called the Breakthrough Science Society began its journey 32 years ago. This organization has also been established in the state.
Friday marked the 32nd foundation anniversary of the organization. To commemorate the occasion, the society organized a programme during which members paid floral tributes to the portraits of renowned scientists from around the world. From the programme, a call was made for everyone to come forward to build a superstition-free society.
In this context, the state secretary of the organization, Tilak Chakraborty, said that even today a large section of the country’s population lacks scientific awareness. People still rush to witch doctors for cures to diseases. The environment is being disrupted, and regions such as Uttarakhand, the Andaman Islands, and the Aravalli hills are being pushed towards destruction. Expressing concern, he said that Darwin’s theory is being removed from the syllabus, and important chapters like the periodic table are being dropped. In their place, concepts of ancient Indian knowledge are being included in the curriculum.
In such a situation, the state unit secretary of the society, Chakraborty, called upon everyone to build a strong science movement across the country and in the state.
On the occasion of the 32nd foundation anniversary of the Breakthrough Science Society, various programmes have been organized across the state over a period of two weeks. These include discussion meetings and sky observation using telescopes, among others.
