The police at the Kathaltali Watch Post in Bazaricharra foiled an attempt to smuggle illegal cannabis from Tripura to Assam using a Bolero pick-up truck that is normally used for transporting fish.

According to reports, around 3:30 PM on Thursday, a Bolero pick-up truck bearing registration number TR(05)J(1807) was attempting to travel from Tripura via an alternative route through Patharkandi to another destination. Upon reaching Kathaltali, the vehicle ignored police signals and sped through the barricade.

At this, Kathaltali Police In-charge Kabir Ahmed Barbhuiya, along with his team and support from other patrol vehicles, began chasing the fleeing vehicle. Meanwhile, the Bolero truck also broke through the barricade at the Sonakhira Police Check Post and continued forward.

Seeing the police vehicle approaching from behind, the driver and co-driver abandoned the Bolero near the Sonakhira railway bridge and fled the scene.

Later, in the presence of CO-SP Anirban Sharma, Bazaricharra Police Station OC Anand Medhi, and SI Prabhakar Choudhury, the police searched the Bolero. Under cartons—meant to appear as if filled with ice and fish—they discovered small and large packets containing approximately five quintals (500 kg) of dry cannabis.

According to the CO-SP, the estimated black-market value of the seized cannabis is around ₹2.5 crore. Police sources said that following the ownership details of the seized vehicle, a case will be registered and further action will be taken.
