While attempting to smuggle cannabis from Tripura to Assam, a truck driver was caught by the Assam Churaibari Police Watch Post along with the consignment of cannabis. This time, although the traffickers tried a seemingly simple method to deceive Tripura police, they could not escape the vigilance of Assam police.

According to the incident report, at around 10 a.m. on Monday, a twelve-wheeled empty truck (registration NL06A-7358) entered Assam from Jirania in West Tripura district, passing through the Tripura border, and arrived at the checkpoint of the Assam Churaibari Police. During a routine inspection, the police initially found nothing inside the truck. However, upon inspecting the exterior body of the vehicle, they discovered a large quantity of cannabis.

The truck carried 68 packets of dry cannabis arranged on both sides, totaling 370 kilograms. The Superintendent of Police, Anirban Sharma, stated that the black-market value of the seized cannabis exceeds ₹2 crore. The truck driver, Rakesh Chakraborty, was also arrested. The driver is a resident of Khamarbari area, Jirania subdivision, West Tripura district.

He admitted to his wrongdoing, revealing that he was transporting the cannabis from Jirania to Lung Shilong in exchange for ₹30,000. He also confessed that he had previously smuggled cannabis from Tripura in a similar manner. Police have filed a case under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and will continue the investigation.

On the other hand, this incident highlights another instance of Tripura police failing to prevent drug trafficking. The cannabis-laden truck had successfully passed through multiple police stations along the national highway while leaving Tripura. This exposes, once again, the lack of vigilance or inactivity of Tripura police in preventing such smuggling operations.
