Driven by the need to put food on the table for their families, they work in various establishments, sacrificing their childhood, dreams, and happiness just to support their households. Their only “crime” is that they are child labourers.

On Wednesday, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights rescued four child labourers during raids conducted at different locations in the state capital. A team of the Commission carried out the operation across various parts of the city under the leadership of Commission Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma.

During the raid, the team identified four establishments where child labourers were engaged. From these locations, a total of four children were rescued. Speaking on the matter, Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma said that whenever information is received about children being employed at any place, the Commission immediately conducts raids and rescues the child labourers. The operation was carried out with the assistance of a task force.

She further informed that the rescued children are being provided with various facilities and support so that they do not have to engage in labour again. The effort, she said, is aimed at saving the lives and future of children.

It is worth mentioning that large-scale construction work is currently underway in Agartala and other parts of the state, where child labourers are often found working while staying in makeshift camps at construction sites. Many children from tribal areas are reportedly dropping out of school midway and taking up tools like sickles, hammers, pickaxes, and shovels to support their families. Various quarters feel that the Commission must keep a close watch on such areas as well.
