On November 21, the Central Government issued a draft notification to abolish 29 labour laws and implement four new Labour Codes. This has intensified workers' protests across the country. The impact is also being felt in Tripura, where various labour unions have begun raising their voices against it. On Thursday, the CITU state organisation held a protest rally in the capital demanding the repeal of the Labour Codes. CITU has described these Labour Codes as “draconian”.
Speaking about the protest rally, CITU state president Manik Dey said that the decision has been taken to abolish 29 labour laws and introduce four Labour Codes. He stated that the Central Government and BJP-ruled state governments are acting as servants of industrial owners. In their service, he said, the rights of nearly 50 crore workers — including future security, social security, wage safety, job security, and the right to strike and protest — are being destroyed. These rights, he reminded, were won through struggle during British rule.
He further said that the introduction of these Labour Codes aims to hand over workers’ rights to the owners. Workers across the country have already taken to the streets against this move. According to Manik Dey, this movement will eventually turn into an intense national political struggle.
The protest rally organised by CITU began in front of the state office and marched through various streets of the city. From the rally, the demand for immediate repeal of the “draconian Labour Codes” was strongly
