Tension had been brewing in the Border Gol Chakkar area for the past several days. According to local residents, the unrest was allegedly incited by a notorious local miscreant named Tirtha Das. On Saturday evening, residents of the area filed a written complaint against Tirtha at the West Police Station. Following the complaint, Tirtha and his associates reportedly became furious.
On Sunday evening, members of his group began identifying those who had filed the police complaint. At one point, they launched an attack on a local shop, vandalizing it extensively. During the rampage, a scooter and a motorcycle were damaged.
At that time, a college student named Ifran Khan was standing in front of a nearby shop. Tirtha and four others allegedly grabbed him by the collar, forced him onto a bike, and took him to their hideout, where he was reportedly beaten up. Ifran later stated that he was taken to a dollar exchange shop near the check post, where around 15 to 16 young men were present.
The assault on the college student further fueled tensions in the area. Local residents began to unite in protest against the attack. Realizing the situation was deteriorating, a large contingent of police, led by West District Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, rushed to the spot. On Sunday night, SP Pathak told reporters that the situation was under control and that a detailed investigation had been initiated.
Meanwhile, late Sunday night, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed in the Border Gol Chakkar area. SP Namit Pathak, along with RAF, police, and TSR personnel, conducted a flag march throughout the locality. Police patrolling continued in the area on Monday morning as well, with heavy tension still prevailing in and around Border Gol Chakkar.
