Human Rights Situation in Tripura Raises Alarming Concerns; Congress Accuses State Commission of Inaction

The human rights situation in Tripura is becoming increasingly alarming. Over the past seven years under the current government, there have been multiple incidents of human rights violations, yet the State Human Rights Commission’s silence and inaction have raised serious questions across various quarters.

These allegations were made by the Law, Human Rights, and RTI Department of the Tripura Pradesh Congress. Expressing deep concern, the department submitted a memorandum on Monday, stating that the commission has failed to fulfill even its basic responsibilities.

The memorandum cites several disturbing incidents from the 2024–25 fiscal year, which, according to the Congress, expose the administrative failures and the weakening of law and order in the state.

The Congress also voiced concern over women’s safety, citing government data that shows 144 rape cases and 31 murders of women in Tripura during 2023–24, along with 9,308 cases of crimes against women registered till January 2025. These figures, they said, reflect the grim reality of insecurity faced by women in the state.

They further alleged that attacks on journalists have become a regular occurrence in Tripura, with several reporters assaulted simply for publishing reports or asking critical questions.

On the role of the State Human Rights Commission, the Congress charged that,

“The Commission has become a puppet in the hands of the ruling party. Its silence has only emboldened the perpetrators of such crimes.”
