Bangladesh cricket is facing a deep crisis. The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), the players’ welfare body, on Wednesday demanded the immediate resignation of BCB Director and Finance Committee Chairman M. Nazmul Islam. They warned that if Nazmul does not resign, all cricket activities will be completely boycotted starting today.
At an urgent online press conference, CWAB President Mohammad Mithun stated that if Nazmul does not resign by 1 PM, all cricket events—including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)—will be suspended. This warning was issued just before the Chattogram Royals vs. Noakhali Express match at the Dhaka regional stadium.
The controversy arose from Nazmul’s highly criticized remarks, in which he said that if Bangladesh does not participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, players would have no right to compensation, and if international performance is poor, the board could recover payments from players. Mithun said these remarks deeply hurt the cricketing community and are completely unacceptable. CWAB has demanded not only Nazmul’s resignation, but also a public apology and action by BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul.
In response to the controversy, the BCB acted swiftly. In a statement, the board said that Nazmul’s remarks were unnecessary, aggressive, and hurtful, and do not reflect the official position of the board. They added that the comments were made on a personal level and possible disciplinary action may be taken, though no specific measures have been announced yet.
Cricket experts believe that this incident could damage the board’s reputation and also have a negative impact on the relationship between the players and the board.
