Demanding the immediate repeal of the “G-Ramji Bill,” which was passed after renaming the MGNREGA scheme, the Tripura Pradesh Congress launched a strong protest movement. On Sunday, Congress workers and supporters organized a protest march, parading through several important roads of the city. After the march, they staged a demonstration by burning an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Leading the protest, Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that the present central government is deliberately strengthening corporate groups, fraudsters, and cheating syndicates financially. He claimed that one attractive scheme after another is being announced solely to protect the interests of the country’s richest 1 percent, as a result of which the economic foundation of the remaining 99 percent of ordinary people is being severely weakened.

He further stated that the nation’s natural resources, airports, waterways, rail services, and almost all productive public sector units and profitable financial institutions are rapidly moving toward privatization. As a consequence, even official government data reflect a rise in layoffs, increasing unemployment, declining wages, and growing insecurity in both social and work environments. At the same time, the prices of essential commodities and economic inequality have also increased alarmingly, he claimed.

Congress leaders further alleged that instead of taking effective measures to resolve these problems, the central government is adopting even more aggressive policies. Ahead of the short parliamentary session, the laws introduced in the name of “labour codes” are effectively curtailing the rights of workers and farmers. According to them, these laws have not only taken away fair rights but have also severely damaged the financial and social security of the working population.

The protesters asserted that the agitation would be intensified further in the coming days against these anti–common people policies.
