In the poorly planned city of Agartala, the road infrastructure is inadequate compared to the growing population. As a result, traffic congestion on various roads has become a daily occurrence. Even in this situation, it has been alleged that the Transport Department is issuing permits in large numbers for CNG autos and electric autos. Demanding an immediate halt to the issuance of these permits, auto workers staged a protest in front of the Transport Bhavan on Wednesday.

The protest was jointly organized by the Tripura Electronics E-Rickshaw Workers’ Union and the Auto Rickshaw Mazdoor Mahasangh. Speaking on the issue, Liton Pal, West Tripura District In-charge of the Tripura Electronics E-Rickshaw Workers’ Union, said that due to the large-scale issuance of auto-rickshaw permits by the Transport Department, routes that require only about 50 vehicles are now seeing more than 500 vehicles operating. As a result, auto workers are struggling to earn even ₹300 to ₹400 per day.

On top of this, they are facing fines imposed by the Transport Department and various problems related to vehicle coloring, which has further increased their harassment. Therefore, the auto workers joined the protest demanding an immediate stop to the issuance of new permits and an end to harassment of auto workers.

Auto workers from various routes across the city participated in the protest program jointly organized by the Tripura Electronics E-Rickshaw Workers’ Union and the Auto Rickshaw Mazdoor Mahasangh. They warned that if their demands are not met immediately, they will launch a much larger movement in the coming days.
