Severe panic spread across the Saidarpara–Simultala area of the Fatikroy Assembly constituency in Tripura’s Unakoti district following a horrific incident of violence. Armed miscreants went on a rampage, setting fire to multiple houses, shops, and vehicles. The sudden arson and vandalism turned the area into a virtual battlefield, forcing many residents to flee their homes in fear for their lives.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attack was carried out in a planned manner. A timber shop was completely gutted, haystacks and several residential houses were set ablaze, and a number of vehicles were vandalised. Several innocent residents were injured during the violence.
To bring the situation under control, the administration swiftly deployed additional forces. Personnel from the TSR, CRPF, and Assam Rifles cordoned off the area. Police resorted to baton charges to disperse the crowd, and drones were used for aerial surveillance. District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar and Acting Superintendent of Police Abinash Rai visited the spot. To restore law and order, Section 163 was imposed, curfew was declared, and mobile internet services were suspended for 48 hours.
Speaking to the media, SP Abinash Rai said that 10 people have already been arrested in connection with the incident. He stated, “A group of miscreants carried out arson in a planned manner. Security forces intervened promptly and brought the situation under control. Strict action is being taken against those responsible.”
According to local sources, the violence erupted over the collection of donations for a religious festival. An argument began when a driver refused to pay the demanded donation, which quickly escalated into violent clashes, assault, and arson. Locals believe the incident has exposed serious weaknesses in the law and order situation.
The administration claims that the situation is now largely under control, although tension continues to prevail in the area. Security patrols have been intensified, and the administration has warned that any attempt to give the incident a communal colour will be dealt with strictly.
The violent incident in Fatikroy has once again raised serious questions about extortion in the name of festivals and the safety of ordinary citizens. There is a growing demand from all sections for exemplary punishment of those responsible to restore peace.
