With the support of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, flower cultivation has brought smiles to the faces of many families living in the Old Agartala agricultural subdivision. There are several schemes for promoting flower cultivation, one of which is the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) project.

Under this initiative, flowers that require partial shade are cultivated in polyhouses. Farmers from different areas under the Old Agartala agricultural subdivision have been provided with such polyhouses. One of the beneficiaries is Anita Das, a resident of West Noagaon Gram Panchayat. A polyhouse covering 200 square meters has been built for her at a cost of around ₹3.93 lakh. She was also given about 1,200 Gerbera flower saplings along with a motor pump and a water tank for irrigation.

Anita has already started harvesting flowers from her polyhouse and selling them wholesale to flower shops in Agartala city. She mentioned that each Gerbera flower sells for a minimum of ₹7. With this support from the department, she has achieved significant financial improvement and expressed her gratitude to the state government and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

Like Anita Das, many farmers across different Gram Panchayats under the Old Agartala agricultural subdivision have found new hope and happiness through this government initiative.
