On Thursday, Assam’s Hon’ble Chief Minister and Chairman of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), Himanta Biswa Sharma, arrived in Tripura at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. He was welcomed at the airport by Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee.

According to political sources, this visit gains special significance in the context of the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, as it comes amid tensions between the BJP and its ally Tipra Motha. Currently, the five-year term of the Tipra Motha-led ADC will end on 18 April 2026.

Just a day before Himanta Biswa Sharma’s visit, a Tipra Motha delegation met Chief Minister Professor Manik Saha at his residence and submitted a memorandum demanding the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. The delegation was led by ADC Executive Member Rabindra Debbarma. Speaking to the press later, he noted that there appeared to be slightly more flexibility in the Chief Minister’s stance on the Kokborok script issue compared to before.

Political analysts suggest that Himanta Biswa Sharma’s visit, in his capacity as NEDA Chairman, could play a crucial role in resolving the ongoing differences between the BJP and Tipra Motha. It is believed that one of the key objectives of this visit is to ease alliance tensions and restore coordination ahead of the ADC elections.
