The general elections for the ADC (Autonomous District Council) and Village Committees are approaching. Meanwhile, in 2026, general elections will also be held for the Agartala Municipal Corporation and 22 other urban local bodies.
With these elections in focus, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held its first phase of organizational meeting on Sunday. The meeting took place at the BJP’s state headquarters in Agartala. Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha, BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, State BJP Vice President Papiya Dutta, and other senior state-level leaders were present.
The meeting lasted for about one and a half hours, during which a detailed discussion was held on the current organizational status of various district committees under the state BJP.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that detailed discussions were held regarding the upcoming ADC and urban local body elections. He stated that the party has decided to further strengthen its organization in preparation for these polls. In response to a journalist’s question, the Chief Minister clarified that there was no discussion in the meeting regarding the election of the next state BJP president.
Meanwhile, BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee described the meeting as a routine organizational review. He said that the decision to strengthen the organization ahead of the ADC, Village Committee, and urban local body elections was taken after collecting opinions from district-level office bearers.
According to sources, the BJP is likely to contest the upcoming ADC elections in alliance with its partner(s). However, if for any reason the alliance does not materialize, the party is prepared to fight the elections independently. The final decision on this matter will be taken later.
Political observers believe that the ADC and Village Committee elections are likely to be held simultaneously. The administration, they say, is also considering advancing the schedule of the urban local body elections to conduct all three elections around the same time. The BJP’s recent organizational meeting is seen as a preparatory move in that direction.
