In 2022, a notification was issued for the recruitment of prison guards under the Prison Department. Following this, unemployed young men and women applied for the posts. Based on their applications, the candidates were called for physical fitness tests, and the results were published. The next step was supposed to be the written examination.

However, nearly four years have passed, and the written test for candidates who cleared the physical examination has still not been conducted. The job seekers approached the officials of the Prison Department several times, submitting deputations demanding that the written exam be conducted so the recruitment process could be completed.

On Wednesday, the same job seekers once again staged a protest in front of the IG Prisons office, holding plates (symbolizing begging) in their hands to draw attention to their demand.

Speaking about the protest, one of the candidates said that the recruitment exam for Police Constables was held in 2022. Two months later, the physical test for prison guards took place. Meanwhile, the recruitment process for constables has already been completed, yet the written exam for prison guards has not been conducted till now.

He further said, “How long are we supposed to wait? Under these circumstances, we have joined this protest holding plates in our hands to plead for jobs from the Chief Minister of the state, Professor Dr. Manik Saha, and the Prison Minister Santona Chakma.”

Later in the day, a delegation of the job seekers met the IG Prisons and submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate conduct of the written examination and completion of the recruitment process for the prison guard posts.
