The Tripura Tea Workers’ Union, affiliated to CITU, staged a protest in front of the Labour Department office demanding immediate steps to withdraw the alleged illegal lockout at the Harish Nagar Tea Garden. On this occasion, the organisation also held a protest march in the state capital.

The protest march passed through various city roads and culminated in a demonstration in front of Shram Bhavan. The programme was led by CITU State General Secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta. Addressing the protesters, he said that the Harish Nagar Tea Garden has been suddenly closed since 5 January, with the management shutting down all offices and leaving the premises.

As a result, tea garden workers are passing their days in severe hardship, facing near-starvation conditions. He alleged that the state government has so far not taken any initiative to stand by the affected workers. He further claimed that the state is being run by an anti-worker government which does nothing beyond making speeches and promises, without taking concrete steps for public welfare.

Therefore, he said, the workers and the union joined the protest programme in front of Shram Bhavan to demand urgent intervention and immediate action to reopen the Harish Nagar Tea Garden.
