With just a night left for the celebration of Makar Sankranti, the Maharani Tulsibati Welfare Trust organized a Makar Sankranti programme on Tuesday at the Agartala Press Club. The Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Debbarma, was present at the event as the chief guest, while State Minister Tinku Roy attended as a special guest.
Inaugurating the programme, Governor Jishnu Debbarma said that Makar Sankranti is closely associated with agricultural activities. He stated that the vehicle of Mother Ganga is the Makara (crocodile). According to the beliefs of the state’s tribal communities, Tirthamukh was once the habitat of crocodiles, and therefore Tirthamukh is considered as sacred as the River Ganga. For this reason, tribal communities visit Tirthamukh during Makar Sankranti.

He further said that Makar Sankranti unites society by strengthening the bond between human beings and nature.
Also present at the programme were one of the youth icons of the state BJP, Bipin Debbarma, West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, along with others.
