For the past several years, illegal constructions have been coming up on government land in the state capital Agartala. Some sections of traders had been continuing these unlawful activities to serve their own interests. Recently, the Agartala Municipal Corporation decided to launch drives against such illegal constructions.
As part of this initiative, on Friday morning the Agartala Municipal Corporation authorities demolished an illegal structure built on government land in front of the HDFC Bank at Math Choumuhani in the capital. Present during the drive were local Corporator Sukhmoy Saha, members of the AMC Task Force, and other officials.
Speaking about the drive, Corporator Sukhmoy Saha said that the Agartala Municipal Corporation would not tolerate encroachment of footpaths. He stated that an illegal wall had been constructed over a government drain, which was causing inconvenience to pedestrians. Hence, the structure was demolished. He also added that such drives will continue in the coming days.
It has been learned that the drive was conducted under Section 7 of the Agartala Municipal Act, which also provides for imposing fines and taking action against those responsible for illegal constructions. However, municipal officials could not clearly state whether any action would be taken against the individual or organization responsible for the illegal construction at this site.
