A resident of the Ashwini Market area under Amtali Police Station, Kamal Dey, did not have any known occupation. Despite this, he was often seen roaming around in expensive clothes, frequently changing mobile phones, and using two-wheelers, which raised suspicion among local residents. That suspicion turned out to be true on Friday night.

On Friday night, police from Amtali Police Station suddenly surrounded Kamal Dey’s house in the Ashwini Market area and conducted a search. During the operation, the police recovered two scooters and one motorcycle, which were kept in a room behind the house. Kamal Dey was arrested in connection with the recovery.

The police action followed a scooter theft incident. During the Agartala Book Fair, on 11 January, a scooter belonging to Sukanta Pal was stolen from the area opposite the Hapania International Fair Ground. The registration number of the scooter was TR 01 AE 7727. After failing to trace his stolen scooter despite searching at various places, Sukanta Pal lodged a written complaint at Amtali Police Station on Friday.

Upon receiving the complaint, Amtali Police registered a case and launched raids at different locations. During the investigation, the police received information about Kamal Dey of the Ashwini Market area and carried out a sudden raid at his house. In this operation, two scooters and one motorcycle were recovered, and Kamal Dey was arrested.

On Saturday, SDPO Parmita Pandey of Amtali Police Station informed the media about the incident. She said that among the recovered vehicles, one scooter belonged to Sukanta Pal. The other recovered scooter and the motorcycle did not have number plates. She added that an investigation has been initiated, and the arrested accused, Kamal Dey, will be taken on five days’ police remand for interrogation. After completion of the investigation, the recovered vehicles will be handed over to their rightful owners.

SDPO Parmita Pandey further stated that Kamal Dey has been accused earlier in several theft cases, and the police have also received information about his involvement in anti-social activities. A thorough investigation into all aspects of the case is underway, she said.
