A new chapter in Indian railway history began today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first “Bande Bharat” sleeper train on the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route from Malda Town Railway Station. Simultaneously, he virtually flagged off the Guwahati–Howrah service of the same train.
This fully air-conditioned sleeper train promises passengers a comfortable, airline-like travel experience at an affordable cost. The modern train service has been introduced to make long-distance travel faster, safer, and more convenient.
The semi-high-speed train consists of 16 state-of-the-art coaches with a total seating capacity of 823 passengers. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 180 km/h, it is expected to benefit regular travelers, students, professionals, migrant workers, businessmen, and pilgrims alike.
The Bande Bharat sleeper train comes equipped with modern facilities, including:
Comfortable sleeper berths
Automatic doors
KAVACH safety system
Modern toilets
Fire detection and security monitoring systems
CCTV surveillance
Digital passenger information systems
In terms of fare, the train is passenger-friendly:
Third AC with meals: ₹2,300
Second AC: ₹3,000
First AC: ₹3,600
As a special feature, passengers boarding from Guwahati will enjoy authentic Assamese cuisine, while those boarding from Kolkata will be served traditional Bengali dishes, offering a unique cultural and culinary experience during the journey.
