NSS stands for National Service Scheme, a central government programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Its objective is to promote social responsibility and personality development among students and youth, based on the principle of “education through service.” The programme was launched in 1969 on the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Its motto is “Not Me, But You,” encouraging students to voluntarily participate in various social and service-oriented activities.
In this regard, the role of the NSS Unit of the Women’s College in the capital is noteworthy, as it regularly organizes various service activities. On Monday, the NSS Unit of the Women’s College organized an awareness programme on the college premises.
The programme was attended by the State Minister for Sports, Tinku Roy. Also present were the Principal of Women’s College, Sarbani Bhattacharyya, and local corporator Himani Debbarma. Inaugurating the awareness programme, Sports Minister Tinku Roy said that the main focus of the event was youth self-reliance and local issues. These local issues include how to translate the slogan of a drug-free Tripura into reality, plantation drives, and building a Clean India.
The volunteers of the NSS Unit of Women’s College were highly encouraged by the presence of the State Sports Minister, Tinku Roy, at the awareness programme.
