Various marine storms, cyclones, and nor’westers originating in the Bay of Bengal have an impact on Tripura. Due to the absence of a modern disaster management system, these weather events cause significant damage to farmers as well as the general public of the state. Considering the seriousness of this issue, the Central Government has decided to install a state-of-the-art weather radar in Belonia, Tripura. Accordingly, land was sought from the state government for setting up the facility.

On Wednesday, in the presence of the Chief Minister at the Secretariat, the Secretary of the Land and Revenue Department handed over 2.2 acres of land to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in this regard. Apart from the Chief Minister, those present at the event included State Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, IMD Director General of Meteorology Dr. Mrutyunjay Mahapatra, Head of IMD Agartala Office Dr. Partha Roy, and other senior officials.

After the programme, IMD DGM Dr. Mrutyunjay Mahapatra and State Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey addressed a press conference at the Secretariat conference hall in the presence of the Chief Minister. During the press conference, Dr. Mahapatra said that there has been a 40 percent improvement in weather-related updates. The Indian Meteorological Department is working closely with the state government to ensure that weather-related information reaches every household.

For this purpose, a decision has been taken to install a state-of-the-art Doppler Weather Radar in the Belonia subdivision of South Tripura, for which 2.2 acres of land is required. On Wednesday, in the presence of the Chief Minister, the state government formally handed over the land to the IMD. The installation work of the radar will now begin, and it is expected to be completed within the next two to three months. Dr. Mahapatra congratulated the Chief Minister and the state government for providing the land necessary for setting up the radar.

Dr. Mahapatra further informed during the press conference that after installing the radar in Belonia, similar Doppler Weather Radars will be installed at Aizawl, Silchar, and Imphal—one at each location. Together, these radars will collect weather-related data from different regions, significantly enhancing the accuracy and richness of meteorological information.
