The murder of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura studying in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, has created a nationwide uproar. Leaders from the Government of India, various ruling parties in different states, and multiple political parties have strongly condemned this brutal killing. All have expressed their solidarity with the bereaved family. Tipra Matha also conveyed the same message.
On Wednesday, Tipra Matha organized a press conference at Chandra Mahal, where Rajeshwar Debbarma and S. K. Zamatia, on behalf of the Matha, expressed their support for the family. During the press conference, S. K. Zamatia stated that unity in diversity is a traditional heritage of India, and the incident involving Angel Chakma goes against this national tradition. He expressed deep regret and condemnation over the fact that students from the North-East are falling victim to violence while studying in Dehradun. He prayed for the departed soul of Angel Chakma and extended heartfelt condolences to his family.
S. K. Zamatia also mentioned that financial assistance is being provided to the family through the ADC, but emphasized that such incidents must not recur. He expressed the opinion that the culprits carried out this heinous act with the support of the ruling party and demanded that the Uttarakhand government, the Government of India, and the Tripura government take measures to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
During the press conference, former MLA and Tipra Matha leader Rajeshwar Debbarma said that the late Angel Chakma had tried to explain to the attackers that he was Indian, not Chinese. Expressing strong anger against the Uttarakhand administration, he stated that initially, the police did not want to register any case regarding the incident. Only after the issue was widely reported in the media across the country and public pressure mounted did the police accept the case. Rajeshwar Debbarma demanded exemplary punishment for the accused involved in this incident.
