Speculation began in state politics following a meeting on the day of Poush Parbon between Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha and a section of Tipra Motha MLAs and ADC members. On Thursday, ADC leaders held a press conference to put an end to these speculations.

Addressing the media, Tipra Motha leader and Executive Member of the ADC Education Department, Rabindra Debbarma, said that the parliamentary party of Tipra Motha had been waiting for a long time to meet the Chief Minister. Finally, on the day of Poush Parbon, the Chief Minister agreed to meet them at his official residence. The party’s MLAs and ADC parliamentary members wanted to attend the meeting, but the Chief Minister preferred to hold discussions with a five-member delegation. Accordingly, a five-member delegation of Tipra Motha visited the Chief Minister’s official residence at 12 noon.

Representing Tipra Motha at the meeting were ADC Education Department Executive Member and former MLA Rabindra Debbarma, current MLAs Biswajit Kalai and Phileps Kumar Reang, and MDC Uma Shankar Debbarma.

At the press conference, Rabindra Debbarma stated that their primary demand was the introduction of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. He said there was an open and detailed discussion on this issue with the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister informed them that he had earlier written letters to the CBSE and ICSE authorities on the matter but had not yet received any response. He assured them that he would write again. The Chief Minister also advised a Tipra Motha delegation to meet the chairpersons of CBSE and ICSE. Accordingly, a Tipra Motha delegation is scheduled to meet the concerned chairpersons later this month.

Rabindra Debbarma further said that the Chief Minister had shown considerable flexibility regarding the introduction of the Roman script for Kokborok, and they were satisfied with his approach. He expressed hope that the issue would be resolved soon.

At the press conference, Tipra Motha spokesperson and former MLA Rajeswar Debbarma also expressed satisfaction with the Chief Minister’s flexible attitude during the meeting. He said that the issue has been continuing for a long time and that several movements had been carried out in support of this demand. He added that he remains optimistic about an early resolution to the problem.
