The name of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, has been removed from the MGNREGA programme. The concerned bill has been amended and renamed as the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Employment Act – Livelihood Mission, abbreviated as the VBG Ramji Bill 2025. This bill was recently passed during the Winter Session of Parliament. Following the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the new bill, opposition political parties across the country have strongly protested.

On Friday, the Congress party began its political programmes for 2026 through protest demonstrations against this move. On the same day, protest programmes were organised against the G. Ram Ji Bill in all states of the country under the initiative of the Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Congress. In the state as well, the Tripura Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Congress organised a protest programme on Friday.

As part of the protest, a rally was taken out from in front of the Congress Bhavan. The rally marched through various streets of the city and reached the base of the Gandhi statue near the Circuit House. There, activists and supporters of the Tripura Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Congress staged a demonstration by burning a copy of the new bill. The state leadership of the organisation informed the media about the protest.

Senior state leaders of the Tripura Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Congress, along with district and sub-divisional leaders, were present at the programme. They also stated that the movement would be carried out at the district level in the coming days.
