Eighty years ago, the Public Education Movement began from Durga Chowdhury Para through the initiative of a small group of tribal youths. The movement was led by Dasarath Deb, Sudhanwa Debbarma, Nilmani Debbarma, Hemanta Debbarma, among others. Launched during the period of royal rule, this movement paved the way for the tribal people of the state to come out of darkness into the light. Every year, this day is observed as Public Education Day.
On the occasion of the 81st Public Education Day, a programme was organised at the CPI(M) state office. Those present at the event included Leader of the Opposition Jiten Chowdhury, former minister Naresh Jamatia, former minister Pranab Debbarma, along with other leaders. As part of the observance, the leaders paid floral tributes to the portraits of the pioneers of the Public Education Movement.
Speaking on the occasion, the Leader of the Opposition said that this day holds immense importance in the history of the state. He noted that eighty years ago, just 11 young men initiated the Public Education Movement with the objective of expanding education among the tribal population. The movement not only inspired the establishment of around 400 schools in the state, but also ignited a sense of awareness among the tribal people. In later years, the movement went on to have a significant impact on the political, social, and cultural spheres.
On this day, the observance was not limited to the CPI(M) state office alone; the 81st Public Education Day was also commemorated with due respect at CPI(M) district, subdivisional, and zonal offices across various parts of the state.
