India is rapidly moving towards self-reliance in defence production, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. He made these remarks today while inaugurating an EV (Electric Vehicle) factory in the Sarojini Nagar area of Lucknow, which falls under his parliamentary constituency. The event was attended by Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Speaking at the event, the Defence Minister noted that the central government has simplified several rules related to defence production and implemented key policy reforms. These measures have significantly boosted the confidence of investors and the industry.
Rajnath Singh highlighted that while the country’s annual defence production was once only ₹46,000 crore, it has now risen to approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore.
He further pointed out a substantial increase in defence exports. Whereas earlier exports amounted to just ₹1,000 crore annually, they have now grown to around ₹25,000 crore. Looking ahead, he expressed optimism that by 2029–30, defence exports are expected to exceed ₹50,000 crore.
According to the Defence Minister, this progress not only strengthens India’s economic power but also reinforces the nation’s goal of achieving self-reliance in the defence sector.
