Under the leadership of Bishramganj Police Station OC Ajit Debbarma, a cannabis-destruction operation began on Monday morning at 6 a.m. The incident took place in the areas of Taktuma Dhung, Ghatigarh, Dhanachar, and Puranbari under Sutar Mura ADC Village, which falls under Bishramganj Police Station.

Large quantities of cannabis had been cultivated in all these locations. On Monday morning, police from Bishramganj Station, along with TSR 1st Battalion, TSR 11th Battalion, and women police personnel, launched the destruction drive. The operation continued from 6 a.m. until 12 noon without interruption.

Speaking to the media, OC Ajit Debbarma said that around four lakh (400,000) mature cannabis plants were destroyed in the operation, with an estimated market value of ₹15–20 crore. These plants were destroyed across 15 forest department plots. He further stated that similar operations against cannabis cultivation will continue in the coming days.

He added that just the previous night, i.e., late Sunday, an operation was carried out in Amarendra Nagar Village under Bishramganj Police Station, where 12,000 cannabis plants were destroyed. The crackdown will continue, he emphasized, because cannabis cultivation is illegal and punishable by law.

OC Ajit Debbarma urged cannabis cultivators to refrain from such illegal farming. He appealed to them to grow vegetables and fruits instead of cannabis. He also warned that if any cultivator is caught, an NDPS case will be registered against them.

Due to consecutive destruction drives by Bishramganj police, cannabis growers are losing sleep. Some had taken loans from self-help groups or banks to cultivate cannabis. In just a few days of operations, the police have broken the backbone of both cultivators and traders.

Last year, a Ganja Protection Committee had been formed to safeguard cannabis plantations. But this year, the committee has completely failed to “manage” the police. Had the cultivators received just a few more days, they would have been able to harvest the crop and take it home—but before that, the police launched continuous raids.
