Historic Turn in Northeast Indian Politics: Formation of Unified Regional Party ‘One North East’
In a landmark development in the political landscape of Northeast India, several regional parties have come together to form a unified regional political platform named ‘One North East’. The official announcement was made on Tuesday at a press conference held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi.
Present at the event were Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K. Sangma, Tipra Motha founder and Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, along with prominent leaders from various northeastern states.
The newly formed party aims to become the collective voice of the people of all eight northeastern states.Conrad Sangma said,
“This is not just an electoral alliance, but a full-fledged political party that will work to address long-standing issues such as regional development, self-governance, and lack of proper representation.”
He further added,
“In the past, attempts at regional unity remained limited to alliances. This time, we are working as a single party — that is our true strength.”
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma highlighted the multidimensional challenges faced by the region — from administrative limitations to border complexities — and said that a united political platform would help raise these issues more effectively.
He emphasized,
“This party will represent not only the people living in the Northeast but also those from the region residing across the country. We will fight against the discrimination and humiliation they often face.”
To shape the party’s organizational framework, a nine-member committee has been formed, headed by NPP leader James Sangma. The committee will draft the party’s constitution, policies, and structure, and maintain outreach with other regional groups and intellectuals.
When asked about potential alliances with national parties, Conrad Sangma stated,
“We will contest elections independently. However, if public interest demands, future collaborations can be considered.”
He concluded by saying,
“This is more than a political alliance — it’s a struggle for the identity of the Northeast. Our goal is to ensure that the voice of the Northeast earns a place of respect in the national discourse.”
Pradyot Debbarma described the initiative as “an emotional, not just political, unity.”
“For the first time in decades, the Northeast is standing under one flag. ‘One North East’ will turn that dream into reality,” he said.
