In Tripura, the Tripura Pradesh Unorganized Workers’ Congress has raised its voice for the rightful demands of farmers and laborers. On Tuesday, the organization organized a protest march in the state capital on various issues, ranging from the repeal of the Labour Code to the protection of farmers’ fundamental rights. Later, through the Labour Department, the leaders submitted a 9-point memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister.
The protest march began at Congress Bhavan around noon on Tuesday, traversing various streets of the city and reaching the Labour Department office. There, the organization’s representatives met with labour officials and submitted a deputation addressed to the Prime Minister.
Leaders of the Unorganized Workers’ Congress allege that although farmers have been grappling with numerous problems for a long time, policy failures by the state and central governments have worsened the crisis. They claim that shortages of fertilizer and seeds, lack of fair prices, and insecurity in border areas are increasing farmers’ losses.
One leader told reporters, “Due to the anti-people decisions of the current government, farmers and laborers are suffering. There is lawlessness in the agricultural sector. Fair prices are not available, and crops are being destroyed in border areas. If quick solutions are not provided, we will be forced to escalate the movement.”
The main demands presented in the deputation include:
Immediate repeal of the Black Labour Code
Increase in farmers’ wages
Extension of gate opening hours in India–Bangladesh border areas
Timely supply of fertilizer and seeds
Neutral investigation of agricultural land damage caused by floodlights in border areas
Adequate compensation based on the extent of losses
The organization has warned that unless immediate steps are taken to protect farmers’ interests, they will have no option but to launch a larger movement.
