The Indian National Congress was founded on 28 December 1885 with the aim of overthrowing British imperialism and securing independence for the country. Mahatma Gandhi played a particularly significant role in the establishment of the Congress. This year, the 141st anniversary of the Indian National Congress will be observed on 28 December. The Congress party has decided to mark the day across the country through various programmes.

In the state, the State Congress will specially observe the 141st foundation day. At a press conference held on Wednesday at the Congress Bhavan, State Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty outlined the programmes. He stated that Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, made a noteworthy contribution to the establishment of the Indian National Congress. However, he criticized the current ruling party for removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the Rega programme.

In this context, on 28 December, the 141st anniversary will be celebrated in each block, mandal, subdivision, and district of the state, highlighting the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. The central programme will be held at Congress Bhavan in Agartala, where the flag will be hoisted and floral tributes offered at Mahatma Gandhi’s pedestal. At 11 AM, Congress members will gather near the Gandhi statue adjacent to the Circuit House to protest the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the Rega programme.

During the press conference, Prabir Chakraborty also strongly opposed the state government’s recent 400-crore agreement with Ramdev for organic farming. He noted that trials with organic fertilizers began in 1988, and it was observed that farmers did not gain much profit from organic cultivation, because organic fertilizers have limited availability, whereas chemical fertilizers are cheaper and more profitable for farmers.
